The Goose Creek 500 kilovolt (kV) Substation Expansion Project installed new electric transmission equipment at our existing Goose Creek 500 kV Substation in Loudoun County, Virginia. Northern Virginia, especially Loudoun County, is experiencing increasing energy demands which is driving the need for additional capacity in the electric transmission system to ensure reliability and resiliency for all customers. This project will improve electric reliability for all customers in the area.
The substation's existing footprint expanded southward on Dominion Energy owned property to accommodate new equipment. Pre-construction activities, including site preparation and vegetation management,, began in late 2022. Construction began in early 2023 and ended as scheduled in December 2023. The Goose Creek Substation Expansion Project is co-located with two other substations.
Day and night site preparation activities started in late March. We performed earthwork activities. Rock may need to be broken up as part of the site preparation, and that can be nosier than simply moving the topsoil layer. Rock excavation activities occur weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. and on weekends between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. only. Other site preparation activities continue overnight. We completed site preparation in June.
The W&OD Trail is located northeast of our substation. Trail users will notice activity, but we do not anticipate any impacts to the trail as a result of this substation project.
