Swanboro Elizabeth City Powerline Project

Purpose

We are rebuilding an aging 230 kilovolt (kV) electric transmission line between our Shawboro and Elizabeth City substations. This project spans approximately 10.3 miles in the North Carolina counties of Pasquotank, Currituck, and Camden. No new right of way is needed.

After nearly five decades of dependable service, the existing structures and components are at the end of their service life and need to be replaced. We will rebuild the wooden H-frame and three-pole structures using weathering steel that is similar in appearance.

Benefits

  • Maintains current right of way
  • New structures located in the same general location as existing structures
  • Complies with mandatory standards to ensure safety, reliability and to meet future needs
  • Minimizes impact to the community and environment
  • Replaces aging infrastructure
  • Strengthens area reliability
