The substation, along with new transmission infrastructure is needed to accommodate load growth and to maintain reliable electric service in the area. Rapid growth in electrical demand, particularly in the commercial/high-tech sector in Loudoun County has resulted in the need to build a new transmission line and substation. This project will improve electric reliability for all customers in the region. At Dominion Energy, we are committed to reviewing and analyzing our energy infrastructure and doing this work safely to provide reliable electric service. Three primary forces drive the need for new electric transmission infrastructure:
These drivers often overlap, and at Dominion Energy, we believe solutions should always account for future energy needs while continuing to balance cost and impacts.
Benefits
For this project, we will build new electrical equipment southwest of the Leesburg Airport Route in Loudoun County. This equipment will support the construction of a nearby data center. In addition, we will build transmission lines to bring electricity to the substation.
Proposed routes for this double circuit transmission line are estimated to be 1.5 miles long and if approved, will connect transmission lines in an existing right-of-way near the Dulles Greenway to the proposed Altair Substation near Leesburg Airport.
The project will include the installation of new steel monopole structures.
