Hornertown-Hathaway Powerline Project

Purpose

We are rebuilding an aging electric transmission line in Halifax and Nash counties in North Carolina. After nearly six decades of dependable service, the lines’ structures and components are at the end of their service life. Replacing this equipment will maintain reliability for our customers.

The approximately 28.9-mile, 230 kilovolt (kV) electric transmission line between our Hornertown and Hathaway substations was built primarily on wooden H-frame structures. The new structures will be weathering steel H-frames. No new or expanded right of way is needed.

Benefits

  • Maintains current right of way
  • New structures located in the same general location as existing structures
  • Complies with mandatory standards to ensure safety, reliability and to meet future needs
  • Minimizes impact to the community and environment
  • Replaces aging infrastructure
  • Strengthens area reliability

Timeline

  • Fall 2023 – Danger Tree cutting begins
*2024 NOTE – Parallel rebuild construction occurs in the same right of way corridor, and there will be gaps between construction activities in any one location
  • Spring 2025 – Preconstruction activities
  • June 2025 – December 2026 – Construction activities
  • Restoration activities continue in 2027
