Providing a greener energy choice for as little as $3 per month
North Carolina natural gas customers can reduce their carbon footprint for as little as $3 per month. GreenTherm is a voluntary program that offsets carbon emissions from natural gas use in customer’s homes and businesses. The program supports renewable natural gas and methane reduction projects in North Carolina, and New York that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
GreenTherm is available to residential and commercial customers and will expand in the coming months. To participate, you may purchase carbon offsets in $3 blocks on your monthly bill. A typical residential customer can offset their entire natural gas carbon footprint each month by purchasing four $3 blocks a month, or $12 total a month, achieving net zero carbon emissions from their monthly natural gas usage.
Typical Customer Type | Typical Annual Usage in therms | Typical Monthly Usage in therms | Est. Blocks to Achieve Carbon Neutrality | Est. Monthly Cost | Est. Annual Cost |
Average Residential | 600 | 50 | 4 | $12 | $144 |
To achieve net zero carbon emissions associated with your natural gas usage, you can log in to your customer account to sign up. If you need to determine the number of blocks to purchase, visit Monthly Energy Use and view Usage History.

Project type: Landfill gas capture/combustion
Name: Buncombe County Landfill
Location: Alexander, NC
Registry: Climate Action Reserve, Project ID: CAR531
When landfill waste decomposes, it produces greenhouse gas emissions. This project captures those emissions before they enter the atmosphere by installing a network throughout the landfill that gathers methane as it is emitted. After the methane is extracted, it is cleaned and used to generate renewable electricity.
Project Type: Landfill gas capture/combustion
Name: Gaston County Landfill
Location: Dallas, NC
Registry: Climate Action Reserve, Project ID: CAR475
When landfill waste decomposes, it produces greenhouse gas emissions. This project captures those emissions before they enter the atmosphere by installing a network throughout the landfill that gathers methane as it is emitted. This methane is then flared (burned). The emissions from burning the methane are much less potent than if the methane was allowed to escape into the atmosphere.

Note: The projects supported by GreenTherm may change over time depending on the availability of carbon offsets.
GreenTherm is a carbon offset program that allows customers to voluntarily offset carbon emissions from natural gas use in their home or business by supporting projects reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
ThermWise is an energy conservation program that promotes the use of energy efficient practices and rebates to reduce natural gas usage.
