100% renewable energy program

This voluntary program enables residential and non-residential customers with the opportunity to match 100 percent of their energy needs with solar, hydropower and biomass renewable energy. The Dominion Energy 100% Renewable Energy℠ program provides customers with the ability to support the continued development of renewable energy sources and ensure a diverse fuel mix.

New to Renewable Energy? Learn the Basics

How Does the Program Work?

Dominion Energy 100% Renewable Energy℠ allows customers' monthly energy usage to be sourced by renewable energy that is generated in the same month and ensures the Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) produced by that same renewable energy generation are purchased and retired on their behalf.

We match 100% of participant's monthly electricity use with renewable energy. An additional 0.398 cents will be added to your bill for every kilowatt-hour of energy you use. This premium goes towards the electricity and RECs associated with this program. For an average residential customer, this is usually less than $5.00 per month.

Annual Resource Mix
2023-2024

pie chart showing the annual resource mix for 2021-2022

Our portfolio for the 100% Renewable Energy Program includes the following:

  • the Scott, Whitehouse and Woodland solar facilities
  • the HXOap, Cork Oak and Sunflower solar power purchase agreements
  • the Gaston and Roanoke Rapids hydroelectric facilities
  • the Altavista, Hopewell and Southampton biomass units

Each year, we will share the annual renewable resource mix of the energy and RECs used in the previous year. We will include location, amount and type of energy supported by the program, so you know exactly what you’re supporting.

Your monthly charge for 100% Renewable Energy is in addition to your monthly electric bill. It may take up to one billing cycle to complete your enrollment.

Yes, you may cancel your enrollment in this voluntary rate at any time without penalty.

An additional 0.398 cents will be added to your bill for every kilowatt-hour of energy you use. This premium goes towards the electricity and RECs associated with this program. For an average residential customer, this is usually less than $5.00 per month.

The 100% Renewable Energy charge (currently 0.0398/kW) could potentially change once a year. The premium will be updated annually to ensure it reflects the current market value of the renewable energy certificates. You will receive advanced notice of price changes.

Also, the total amount of the charge will fluctuate because it matches the total energy you’re using in your home or business each month. The average residential customer uses 1,000 kWh each month and would pay about $3.98, but you may use more or less energy than average. As a result, your charges will be higher or lower than this amount.

This extra charge will appear on your monthly bill as 100% Renewable Energy (RIDER TRG).

No, nothing will change about how electricity is delivered to your home or business. The renewable energy will be added to the grid on your behalf.

That is correct, you are only paying an additional 0.398 cents per kWh. This program will appear on your bill as two line items:

  • 100% Renewable Energy (RIDER TRG)
  • Rider TRG – Balancing Charge

The 100% Renewable Energy (RIDER TRG) charge is the renewable energy premium that costs an additional 0.398 cents per kWh. This is based on the market value of Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) for the portfolio of resources dedicated to the program.

The Rider TRG – Balancing Charge is the non-REC related generation cost for the program as approved by the Commission. As you can see on the bill examples below, the Rider TRG – Balancing Charge replaces the normal monthly generation, fuel, and non-bypassable charges previously on your bill under your rate schedule. Customers are responsible for covering generation, fuel, and non-bypassable charges, regardless of if they are participating in the 100% Renewable Energy program.
