Dominion Energy Crews Preparing for Storm

Western North Carolina Gas Customers

  • Our crews are evaluating and addressing natural gas system impacts. We have brought in additional resources from across the state to help support our efforts.
  • We have interrupted gas service to the most heavily impacted structures as a safety precaution and this is expected to continue for some time given the extent of the damage to local infrastructure. Other areas not directly impacted are operating normally.
  • Road closures and flooding conditions continue to impede the utility and emergency response personnel from safely accessing the most heavily impacted areas.
  • Impacted natural gas customers should expect delayed responses to natural gas outages and emergencies due to accessibility issues caused by debris, downed powerlines and trees, and flooded areas. Once able, we will respond as quickly as possible.

Safety Guidance During Flood Events

  • If you detect a gas leak or there is a broken or exposed gas line, leave the area immediately, warn others to stay away and, from a safe place, call Dominion Energy at 877-776-2427 and call 911.
  • If you turn off the gas supply to individual appliances because of flooding, contact a qualified gas plumber or contractor to inspect and relight those appliances.
  • It is not necessary to turn off your natural gas service at the meter. This valve should only be turned off by the utility or emergency personnel.

Know the signs of a possible natural gas leak.

  • Rotten egg odor.
  • Hissing, whistling or roaring sound near a gas appliance or the pipeline.
  • Dirt or debris being blown into the air.
  • Persistent bubbles in streams, ponds or wet areas.
  • Discolored or dead vegetation over or near the pipeline.
  • Flames if a leak has ignited.

If you smell natural gas, DO NOT:

  • Attempt to turn natural gas valves on or off.
  • Turn on or off any electric switch; this could cause a spark and ignite the gas.
  • Use your telephone, cell phone, garage door opener or a flashlight.
  • Smoke, use a lighter or strike a match.
  • Start or stop nearby vehicles or other machinery.
