This summer, customers who are selected for participation will have the opportunity to take part in the My Energy Target Challenge. From July to September, customers who lower their energy to achieve a target could receive a cash reward.

How it works. At the start of the challenge, we will provide each participating customer with two energy-saving targets. The goal is to reduce your energy use by a certain percentage before the end of the challenge to achieve your targets and receive your reward. Throughout the challenge, we’ll send you monthly progress updates that: 

  • Track your progress so you can see exactly how close you are to hitting your targets.
  • Highlight simple, high-impact energy-saving tips to set you up for success.

Only have a second? Here are some small actions you can take to help you achieve your energy-saving goals this summer season.

  • Cover pots and pans while cooking to speed up the cooking process and prevent heat from escaping.
  • Set your water heater temperature to 120°F to save big on energy while staying comfortable.
  • Open all air vents inside your home to ensure your AC system is working efficiently.
  • Adjust the air conditioner’s fan to the “auto” setting to prevent the fan from always running.
  • Ensure the area around your AC unit or AC window unit is clear of plants and debris to prevent damage and ensure proper functioning.

Top-Tier Tips -- Small Changes, Big Savings:  

These small but mighty actions are sure to help you save big this summer!

  • Grill outside instead of using the stove or oven to avoid heat buildup and keep it cool inside.
  • Set the thermostat to the EPA recommended 75-78°F to save energy when home and to 80-83°F when away for a long period of time. 
  • Seal air leaks from windows and doors. Even small drafts can cause large impacts to your overall energy usage.
  • Replace old incandescent lightbulbs with LED lightbulbs.

High-Impact Habits:

Become a home hero with these simple habits.

  • Change air filters every 1-3 months to improve air quality and keep the system in shape.
  • Clean the dryer’s lint filter after every load to keep the machine running efficiently and avoid fire hazards.
  • Use small appliances like air fryers, slow cookers, and toaster ovens instead of the stove or oven.
  • Cool off with fans before turning the AC way up.

  • Move objects that block vents and radiators and open interior doors to let heated air flow freely.
  • Set the water heater temperature to 120°F to save big on energy while still enjoying hot showers.
  • Open curtains and blinds during the day to let in light and warmth, close them at night to prevent heat loss.
  • Make sure the fridge is a few inches away from the walls, so it doesn’t have to work too hard.
  • Set ceiling fans to turn clockwise to push warm air down. Fans are not just for summer and can help you feel warm and comfortable this way.

  • Replace old incandescent lightbulbs with LED lightbulbs.
  • Seal air leaks from windows and doors. Even small drafts can cause large impacts to your overall energy usage.

High-Impact Habits:

Become a home hero with these simple habits.

  • Change furnace filters every 1-3 months to improve air quality and keep the system in shape. Set a calendar reminder now so you don’t forget.
  • Clean the dryer’s lint filter after every load to keep the machine running well and avoid fire hazards.
  • Turn off the heated drying cycle on the dishwasher settings and open the door to let dishes air dry. 
  • Close the damper in your fireplace when it is not in use to prevent heat from escaping.

 You don’t have to do it alone – make it a team effort!

  • Talk to others in your household about the benefits of saving energy, like saving money on your bill, reducing energy waste, and having a positive environmental impact.  
  • Show others in your household how you’re doing in the My Energy Target challenge and talk about how to achieve your goals together.
  • Reward yourselves for achieving your goals with something fun and eco-friendly, like a family picnic, a movie night, or a donation to a green cause.
