Why Should I Enroll My Home in Reward Hours?

Enrolling your home is the most flexible option for joining the Reward Hours program.

This option allows you to choose how to reduce your homes electricity usage during reward hours. For example, temporarily adjust your thermostat and delay laundry, cooking, washing dishes, or charging your EV.

It’s up to you, you’re in control! And, if it’s not convenient to participate when we alert you about reward hours, you can decide not to participate without penalty.

Benefits to Enrolling My Home in Reward Hours

  • Participation is voluntary.
  • No fees or penalties.
  • Opt-out at any time.

How Much Could I Earn in Rewards?

In general, we estimate customers could earn between $1-$1.25 for each hour they reduce their home’s electricity usage during reward hours. That means on average customers could earn between $20-$30 a year if responding to all reward hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Qualified Home is a South Carolina residence that:

  • Receives electric service from Dominion Energy South Carolina under any residential rate schedule,
  • Is occupied by the party that is responsible for its electric bill,
  • Is not enrolled in Thermostat Reward Hours,
  • Is not enrolled in Solar Choice,
  • Is not used as a short-term rental property (i.e., vacation rental, VRBO, AirBnB, etc.) for more than 14 days in a calendar year,
  • Receives service through an AMI meter.

The current incentive offer, effective 4/17/2025, is as follows:

  • Utility bill credit of “$1.30” x “Reduced kWh Amount” (r | kWh)
  • The “Reduced kWh Amount” is the total amount of electricity (in kilowatt hours) you reduced during the reward hours.
  • Using advanced meter data, we calculate your typical electricity usage for hours that are similar to the scheduled reward hours. This is your “Typical kWh Usage (t | kWh)”.
  • Then, we subtract your actual kWh usage (a | kWh) during the reward hours from your Typical kWh Usage. The result is your “Reduced kWh Amount (r | kWh)”.

Incentive Calculation: (t | kWh) - (a | kWh) = (r | kWh)

We can’t guarantee the number of reward hours we may schedule.

Reward hour schedules will typically be two to three (2-3) hours in duration and occur between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. during the heating season (November 1st – March 31st) and between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. during the cooling season (April 1st – October 31st). It is possible that reward hours may occur at different times.

You will receive a text notification from Dominion Energy South Carolina to the preferred mobile number you provide. The text message will include when reward hours are planned, typically between 10 and 24 hours in advance.

Example text from Dominion Energy:

Reward hours are scheduled from 6am-9am tomorrow. Reduce your electricity usage during these hours to earn rewards! Reply STOP to cancel.

We can’t guarantee the number of reward hours we may schedule.

We anticipate reward hours to occur two to five (2-5) times during cooling season and seven to ten (7-10) times during heating season. However, reward hours may occur more or less, depending on conditions.

  • Adjust your thermostat setting a few degrees, appropriate for the season, so that your HVAC system cycles on less frequently.
    • For Heating: Adjust your thermostat to 68° or lower when the temperatures start to drop. Set it even lower (62°-65° F) while away from home.
    • For Cooling: Adjust your thermostat to 78° or higher when the temperatures start to rise. Set it even higher (80°-83° F) while away from home.
  • Delay using major appliances (i.e., space heater, electric fireplace, oven, dryer, dishwasher or washer) until after the reward hours have ended.

No, you are not allowed to enroll in both options at the same time. You must unenroll your thermostat from Reward Hours first if you want to enroll your home.

No. Solar customers are not eligible to enroll their home in Reward Hours at this time.

If it’s not convenient to participate when we alert you about reward hours, you can decide not to participate without penalty. Participation is completely voluntary. Once you’re enrolled, you’re eligible for rewards during any reward hours where you successfully reduce your electricity usage. If you can’t reduce your electricity usage during a particular reward hour, you will remain in the program and have other opportunities to participate in the future.

For reward incentives that are bill credits, it may take 1-2 months for the credits to appear on your bill.

Rewards are based on whether you used less electricity than you typically use during hours that were similar to the reward hours.

If you’re a customer who doesn’t typically use much electricity, it may be more difficult to reduce your usage significantly enough to earn rewards during reward hours.

For example, turning off lights or waiting to charge your phone won’t make much of an impact during reward hours. Typically, the biggest impact comes from adjusting your thermostat, delaying the use of major appliances, and using less hot water.

Yes, a mobile number is required to enroll your home in Reward Hours and you must agree to receive text notifications. A text notification provides us the most efficient way to notify you in advance of upcoming reward hours.
