What is voltage optimization?

Voltage Optimization is a Demand Side Management (DSM) program that is part of the overall Grid Transformation Plan approved by the SCC in January 2022. This program will help Dominion Energy meet the energy efficiency standards established in the Virginia Clean Economy Act.

How does Voltage Optimization benefit me?

Voltage Optimization is an energy conservation program. This program enables Dominion Energy to optimize voltage levels in a manner that reduces energy consumption for most customers.

How do you optimize voltage levels?

Dominion utilizes a software program that analyzes smart meter data. The program then relays information to equipment in our substations that adjusts voltage levels in a manner that achieves targeted energy savings.

How do you select where to implement this program?

The Voltage Optimization Program is a system wide program that benefits all customers. Implementation will be performed over multiple years. The smart meter deployment is actively underway and the data from these meters is foundational to the success of the program.

Will I experience a decrease in the quality of electric service received at my home or business?

Implementation of the Voltage Optimization program will not affect the quality or reliability of your service. Leveraging technology, we are able to regulate voltages without creating a noticeable difference in the quality of electric service at your home or business.

What work is being done?

Dominion will need to do some preliminary work in order to get the system ready to support the Voltage Optimization effort. We are using contractors to design and construct much of this work. Our contractor partners will have vehicle markings identifying them as authorized contractors of Dominion Energy and they will carry Dominion Energy contractor badges. You will be notified if any improvements are planned in your area. Work affecting your property will be discussed with you prior to the start of construction activities.
