Dominion Energy Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
This article is about:
CAYCE, S.C. (Oct. 2) – Lively and loud – yet structured – is how Zemi Rodriguez remembers her culture-rich surroundings as a child in a Hispanic household on 142nd St. in the middle of Manhattan. That’s where she learned the importance of representation.
“My parents are from the Dominican Republic,” said Rodriguez, a South Carolina-based bilingual customer service trainer with Dominion Energy. “Music, dancing, singing, gatherings, religion, family, the chase of the American Dream, and delicious foods were a staple in my home.”
In her 15 years with Dominion Energy, Rodriguez has seen growth in employee diversity.
"When I started at the company, I didn't see a lot of Hispanics in leadership roles, and there were only three bilinguals in my class of 16 new hires,” she said. “Things have changed so much now; the representation has grown significantly.”
Rodriguez is pleased to see this growth in representation among coworkers who she said has become her family.
“It was evident that I had entered a family, not a company,” she said. “The pride, belief and embodiment of the company values were clear and evident in every employee. Working here was a huge deal. Everybody wanted to work here.”
In alignment with Dominion Energy’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, the company has expanded several resource groups to the Carolinas.
Rodriguez and several colleagues have been hard at work sharing more of the Hispanic and Latino culture with her Dominion Energy family. She is the inaugural chair of the Southeast chapter of the ¡Hola! employee resource group, which welcomes employees from any background to join to learn about the different cultures, experiences, and contributions of the Hispanic and Latino community.
“I am honored to have been able to get the ¡Hola! Southeast chapter started,” Rodriguez said. “I hope it provides comfort, camaraderie, resources, knowledge, and support for employees through service to the communities we serve for many years to come.”
