Dominion Energy’s best-in-class internship program helps cultivate a workforce prepared to serve the 7 million Americans nationwide that depend on us to provide the safe and reliable energy they need to fuel their lives. This National Internship Day, we’re spotlighting two interns from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T), one of the schools selected as part of Dominion Energy’s $25 million HBCU Promise℠ initiative.
She’s studying Electrical Engineering and is working as an Electric Distribution Standards Intern. This is her second summer working for Dominion Energy.
Jordan is studying Marketing, and it’s his first year interning with Dominion Energy. He’s supporting the Talent Acquisition & Student Employment segment of Human Resources.
Felisse: I heard about Dominion Energy through the College of Engineering at N.C. A&T. I received an email from them about Dominion Energy’s first ever Diversity Student Conference. I applied and attended the Conference in fall of 2019.
Jordan: I initially had Dominion Energy on my radar from an employee, who I met at the New Chesapeake Men for Progress scholarship breakfast my senior year of high school in 2019. I applied and did not end up getting an internship for summer 2020. But, later in the summer, one of my friends, who is now a full-time employee at Dominion Energy, encouraged me to apply for the Diversity Student Conference at the end of 2020. So long story short, I am from the Diversity Student Conference pipeline.
Felisse: Dominion Energy is like a tree with many branches and roots. Those roots are the different business segments at Dominion Energy and thanks to them, the company can flourish. Since I am an in-person intern this time around, I have been able to have a closer look at the different aspects that make up Dominion Energy, and it is much more complex on the inside than it looks to the public. Each department at Dominion Energy relies on each other.
Jordan: It’s not exactly about energy but learning how much more Dominion Energy is than a standard utilities company has been an interesting revelation. I’ve been served by Dominion Energy my whole life, so my preconceived notion was that Dominion Energy was only a utility and not a dynamic workplace. The most interesting part is the moment we are living in. We are in an extremely transformative period in the energy industry so knowing the power Dominion Energy holds—no pun intended—within the industry to blaze a new trail is fun to think about.
Felisse: The greatest takeaway from my time here at Dominion Energy is don’t be afraid to ask questions. There are always opportunities at Dominion Energy to learn something new, often I do ask questions to either confirm what I thought the answer was or to clarify something that I was confused about.
Jordan: With working in Human Resources, I have learned the ins and outs of what makes a candidate look attractive on the recruiting side. I gained a new respect for the hiring process because as someone on the outside, I thought it was so simple to look at the resume and simply say, “I want these people to be interviewed.” I also will take the lesson of not limiting myself. Coming into my internship, I was very unsure of how my marketing background would factor into a staffing role, but I have come to find out that I fit right into whatever I need to do.
Felisse: When I heard that N.C. A&T became one of Dominion Energy’s HBCU Promise℠ partners, I was not only surprised but also excited. In the past, HBCUs didn’t really receive a lot of attention from companies. As a student of N.C. A&T, I have witnessed talent from my peers who are looking for a chance to show the world what they’ve got. I believe that this partnership will further the excellence that comes from N.C. A&T and other HBCUs.
Jordan: With the turmoil of the past 20 months, I think seeing Dominion Energy walk the walk—Actions Speak Louder—is a great step in the right direction. The HBCU Promise℠ partnership is greatly appreciated in aiding the longevity of the contributions that historically Black colleges and universities, in this specific case N.C. A&T, make to the workforce and society at large. It is empowering that my school is one of the 11 schools being recognized as the national leader in producing African American engineers. It is a beneficial opportunity for more excellent Aggies—as well as other HBCU alumni— to come in and contribute to the workforce in game-changing ways.
