A Letter from Edward H. Baine, President, Dominion Energy Virginia
The letter talks about serving customers and communities, clean energy future, protecting the environment and empowering our people.
This article is about:
Serving Customers and Communities (day-to-day operations, storm response, support to charitable causes, EnergyShare, HBCU grants)
Clean Energy Future (solar/wind/energy storage investments, electric school buses)
Protecting the Environment
Empowering Our People (safety performance, attracting/developing/retaining a diverse workforce)
2020 presented all of us with many challenges, but it also reminded us that we are all in this together. We never lost sight of our mission of providing you with safe, reliable and affordable energy around the clock.
From the earliest days of the pandemic, we took action to protect the health and safety of our customers, our communities and our employees, and help those affected by the coronavirus. We suspended service disconnections, waived late fees, provided face masks for critical-care providers and donated $1.1 million to relief efforts.
We provided an essential service when you needed it the most, and we took our commitment to you very seriously. We spent 2020 serving the communities in which we live and work, building a cleaner and more sustainable energy future, and doing our part to protect the environment.
We were here for you 24x7 in 2020, and it showed in our day-to-day operations and our storm response. We connected thousands of new customers, completed 76 power station outages, and successfully responded to many major storms, including Hurricane Isaias, the 10th largest storm response effort in our company’s history.
We invested in our electric transmission and distribution systems to ensure continued reliability and resiliency, developed several projects to help extend broadband into rural localities, and introduced 11 new energy efficiency and demand response programs.
Giving back to our communities is a fundamental aspect of our company. We contributed $48.5 million through energy assistance grants to nonprofits serving human needs, education, the arts and cultural institutions. We expanded our bill assistance program, EnergyShare, to $14 million. Our employees also volunteered more than 60,000 hours in 2020.
Following the social unrest in our country, we committed $5 million to nonprofits focusing on social justice and equality and to help rebuild communities. We also committed $35 million to advance higher education equity — $25 million in support of historically black colleges and universities and $10 million in scholarships for African American and other underrepresented minority students.
You have told us that you want cleaner, more sustainable energy. We do too, so we took the next steps toward achieving net zero carbon and methane emissions by 2050 and meeting the standards outlined in the Virginia Clean Economy Act. To reach these commitments:
We took great strides to conduct our business in an environmentally responsible manner and reduce our impact on the environment. We were mindful that we must be good stewards of the resources that have been entrusted to us.
We lowered greenhouse-gas emissions, protected water quality, reduced and reused waste, and preserved wildlife habitats. And we looked for innovative ways to address climate change and preserve our environment for future generations.
Safety is our most important core value, and we had our best safety year ever in 2020 despite the many challenges and distractions associated with the pandemic. We can be proud but never satisfied until we reach our ultimate goal of no one ever getting hurt. In 2021, we will maintain a relentless focus on improving our safety performance.
We also focused on attracting, developing and retaining a diverse workforce, as well as creating a work environment where our employees are respected, valued and appreciated. We are proud to be ranked among America's best employers for diversity (Forbes) and America's most responsible companies (Newsweek). We were also named "Best for Vets" (Military Times) and received a perfect score from the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index.
Through the challenges of 2020, we have worked tirelessly to deliver on your expectations. We thank you for your support. We look forward to serving you in 2021 and beyond.
Sincerely,
Edward H. Baine
