This article is about:
Helping people returning from service navigate workforce and education systems as they reintegrate into civilian life.Ten years ago, former Dominion Energy CEO Tom Farrell saw a need across the country to support our nation’s returning veterans and met that need with compassion, grace, and action with the Troops to Energy Jobs (TTEJ) initiative. The Troops to Energy Jobs initiative helps provide solid footing toward bridging service experience and training to meaningful employment in the energy industry.
Its mission is clear: to help people returning from service navigate workforce and education systems as they reintegrate into civilian life. Its model is robust, offering service men and women a path to success in work areas that need their individual experiences and skill sets. The Troops program is a comprehensive resource for transitional support providing a website with an interactive roadmap, apprenticeships, job boards, a job match up tool, opportunities for military spouses, and more.
Matt Kellam, Workforce Development & Planning Coordinator, worked with Tom Farrell and CEWD to bring the TTEJ to life. “The Troops to Energy Jobs program is especially meaningful to me,” says Matt, US Marine Corp veteran. “I was in the position of representing DE from the very beginning and helping develop the program with CEWD and the other five peer companies on behalf of our industry and for military, veterans, and military spouses for decades to come.”
A few years after the launch of TTEJ, Matt and Saddiq Holliday, Military & Recruitment Coordinator turned their attention to enriching and refining Dominion Energy’s approach to military recruitment. Part of that focus was – and still is – strengthening DE’s network within the communities we serve and supporting military service men and women while developing our talent pipeline.
Today, Saddiq, a US Air Force veteran, continues to put his heart into military recruitment. ‘It’s a labor of love,’ he says. He personally attends career fairs and social events, and events hosted by military and veteran organizations, college veteran organizations, and any other opportunity to speak with transitioning service people.
Nicholas Caffacus, Navy Veteran, Instrumentation & Controls technician
“I was really happy to come to Dominion after the Navy,” says Nick. “Working in I&C allows me to use 100% of my Navy nuclear background. At the same time, I’m getting additional training specific to the work I do here.”
Mark Green, Navy Veteran, DE Threat Intelligence
Mark Green, DE Threat Intelligence, says, “As a member of a highly specialized Navy SEAL Team, my transition to my position in Corporate Intelligence and Security was seamless and a perfect fit for the skills that I took 20 years to develop and perfect.”
He adds, “I’m able to thrive in a small and specialized team, with a mission that supports an incredible leader in the energy industry. I’m incredibly happy and proud to work for Dominion Energy.”
Rachel D’Ambra, Navy Veteran, Reactor Controls Division Officer; Engineering Watch Officer
“Prior to my current Millstone Power Station role as Primary and Reactor Engineering Supervisor, I was an Electrical and Instrumentation & Controls Engineering Supervisor. Being hired for that role is attributed to my Navy nuclear training and experience as a Reactor Controls Officer on board the USS Enterprise (CVN-65; carrier) where I supervised the Electronics Technicians. My operational duties serving as Engineering Watch Officer prepared me for crisis situations, how to work well as a team under pressure, and focused troubleshooting.”
She adds, “Having experienced the regimented military life for nine years, one of the things I really like about Dominion Energy is the flexibility when it comes to family. As a working mom with two small children at home and an active-duty Navy husband, it’s important to me that DE puts value on family.”
Sam Rodriguez, Army Veteran, Warrant Officer, Transportation Logistics and Port Construction
“Dominion Energy truly saw the value in bringing me on the CVOW project based on my experience and expertise attained in my 22 years of military service,” says Sam, a construction project manager for DE’s Offshore Wind Project. “Once onboard I really felt welcomed and not just part of a team but part of something larger, finding a new calling and making my transition easier."
To date, Dominion Energy employs 3,083 veterans across the company. That’s 18 percent of our total employee population – a significant number – and it’s a number that will keep growing. More importantly, it’s a number that translates to real people who have selflessly served our country and who are now more than simply employed. They are trained in specialized fields in the energy industry and have solid career paths – and futures – with Dominion Energy.
As we celebrate the tenth anniversary of Troops to Energy Jobs, we celebrate and thank all those in military service every day.
