Astyra Corporation, a staffing and consulting firm in Richmond, Va., is transforming business operations in communities across the country through partnering with Dominion Energy.
Ken Ampy and Sam Young founded Astyra Corporation, knowing they wanted to give back to their community. That inspiration came from watching Sam’s father run a nonprofit in the city of Richmond, Va.
“Being part of the community, that's ingrained in Ken and myself,” says Sam Young, President of Astyra Corporation. “My father used to run a nonprofit in the city, and so when Ken and I said we wanted to start a business, you know, he lit up.”
Fast-forward 25 years, Astyra has grown into a company jumpstarting information technology (IT) careers while providing IT consulting resources for companies and organizations spanning many industries. The company has also stayed true to its original goal by giving back. Since opening their doors, employees have volunteered more than 10,000 hours in the community on their way to helping dozens of vital organizations.
Astyra’s aspiration to be leaders in the communities they serve, made the company an ideal partner and diverse supplier for Dominion Energy. The company was recognized as one of the top 500 Diversity Owned Business in the United States in 2014, and as one of the Fastest Growing Private Companies in America in 2021.
And their accolades and involvement in the community goes beyond the cubicles and walls of their office building. Ampy is the board chair of the State Council for Higher Education for Virginia and of the Virginia Credit Union, and Young has chaired the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority board as well as the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce.

In the early nineties, many people were purchasing their first computer and needed someone to come set it up. Ken and Sam saw this as an opportunity to start their business as technology consultants. “Because we had been consultants, we decided to change the focus of the company to being a staffing and consulting firm,” says Ken Ampy, CEO.
Today, Astyra is a national provider of information technology staffing and consulting services; offering numerous solutions to solve your business and organizational needs. At the beginning of the partnership, Astyra first worked on a project request from Dominion Energy to upgrade 25,000 workstations across seven states and has continued to help with similar projects throughout their partnership. They have been able to stay successful due to their belief in staying true to what works, focusing on people, process, and technology.
“We’ve been a vendor to Dominion for over 20 years and today we've been able to grow into doing very large projects,” Ampy adds. “Without companies like Dominion, a lot of businesses wouldn't exist.”
