Iris Griffin oversaw integration of SCANA and Dominion Energy
This article is about:
Griffin is first woman to oversee power generation in SCIn February 2021, Bennettsville native Iris Griffin made history by becoming the first woman to oversee power generation for Dominion Energy South Carolina.
As vice president of Power Generation, Griffin is responsible for the company’s fleet of non-nuclear fuel plants in South Carolina, including coal, natural gas and hydroelectric facilities - like the Saluda Dam on Lake Murray, pictured above. These facilities generate power needed to serve more than 760,000 accounts across the Aiken, Charleston and Columbia markets.
Griffin grew up in Marlboro County until leaving for college at the University of South Carolina. After graduation, she moved to Raleigh to work for a public accounting firm. Eventually, she realized she missed South Carolina and moved back to Columbia to be closer to friends and family. That led to another position with an accounting firm in the Midlands, where she built experience in auditing and tax services.
“My grandparents lived about a half-mile away, and my aunt lived next door. I could ride my bike to visit them anytime. It was a wonderful place to grow up.”
After a stint in public accounting, Griffin decided to take a job as an internal auditor for SCANA, Dominion Energy’s predecessor in South Carolina. She has since worked her way up through various roles at the company, including in investor relations, corporate compliance, and treasury. Before SCANA merged with Dominion Energy in 2019, she was promoted to vice president of Finance and then chief financial officer. Griffin oversaw the integration of both companies.
“We have an amazing team of individuals here at Dominion Energy South Carolina who truly care about each other, our customers, and about doing a good job.”
Now in a top position in a sector of the energy industry where female leaders are few and far between, Griffin acknowledges there have been times in her career when it was tough being a woman. However, she believes tough times make people stronger.
Griffin said her community in Bennettsville was full of “strong, amazing women,” she considers role models.
“They taught me that you should work hard and treat other people like you want to be treated,” she said. “That, quite simply, is my leadership philosophy.”
In addition to her role at Dominion Energy, Griffin serves on several nonprofit boards, including Habitat for Humanity, City Year, the Columbia Museum of Art and the Business Partnership Foundation at the University of South Carolina.
In her free time, Griffin is an avid reader who loves audiobooks. She also enjoys running, biking and spending time in nature. She now lives in Chapin, South Carolina with her husband and son.
