We're committed to ensuring our workforce is representative of the communities we serve
Christian Stewart, a member of the Chickahominy Tribe and student at Virginia Tech, shares his summer internship experience with Dominion Energy.
This article is about:
Stewart joined the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department through the Native Pathways internship recruitment program. i . The program focuses on increasing Native American representation within Dominion Energy to support and invest in Native Communities across our footprint.
“Being able to recognize your own culture and feel at home somewhere is huge,” says Stewart. “You don’t want to be somewhere where you feel foreign or distant from your colleagues.”
As a part of his internship, Stewart played a role in shaping the Native Pathways program, including how it will benefit potential tribal employees in the future. From working to update job postings — gearing them toward a younger, more diverse talent pool — to conducting outreach to Native American tribes and organizations for the company’s annual Diversity Student Conference, Stewart says these efforts mean a lot.
Stewart says he has fond memories of attending “Indian School” where elders passed down traditional cooking methods and skillsets — like bead-making and leatherwork — and attending his tribe’s powwows. It’s a similar kind of familial orientation that, Stewart says, he found during his internship.
“Dominion Energy has taken the correct steps to diversify their workforce,” he adds. “They care about you just as much as you care about your own family. It means a lot."
